SUNS is a color-changing footwear brand on a mission to combat bullying through a campaign that encourages kids to spread positivity by performing daily acts of kindness. In 2018 they partnered with international model, Grace Mahary to create a special shoe to bring attention to her nonprofit organization called Project Tsehigh. Proceeds helped bring solar energy to communities in Eritrea.
SUNS footwear features a innovative technology that causes their shoes to change color when exposed to sunlight. I led the design and development of several styles including a special collaboration between the brand and Grace Mahary. For our initial meeting I created a chart to visually explain the color-changing capabilities of the manufacturing partner. Learning about Grace's nonprofit organization, Project Tsehigh provided inspiration and a design direction for the project. I created 3 initial concepts based on the Eritrean scarf print she provided.
We decided our favorite effect was starting with a completely white shoe that comes to life when exposed to sunlight. Once we aligned on the colors of the design, I provided CAD renderings of the shoe before and after exposure. The shoe launched in the Summer of 2018 and profits were used to purchase solar panels that brought electricity to communities in need in Eritrea.
I also designed several other shoes in the SUNS product line. I edited photos of all their products for the initial brand launch and designed the product hang tags and shoe box packaging.
