OVERVIEW: 

Sperry is an iconic American footwear brand and originator of the classic boat shoe. The company was founded in 1935 and continues to sell men's and women's footwear across a variety of classifications and distribution channels. I had the fortunate opportunity to spend the first 6 years of my career with the brand and built a strong foundation of footwear industry knowledge.

Footwear Design

During my time on the men's design team, I worked on seasonal updates for heritage styles and generated many original footwear concepts. I refined my sketching abilities and CAD rendering skills. With every completed design cycle, I became more proficient at bringing products from initial sketch to production. The Billfish Ultralite was my most successful design which capitalized on the trend of athletic shoe details on casual footwear styles. The 3-Eye boat shoe upper design featured a flexible EVA cupsole with a painted midsole topline, and a rubber outsole drop-in. The product remained in the line over 4 years.

 

Concept Development

Working at Sperry helped me identify trends in the market and apply them appropriately through a brand filter. The Razorfish was a fashion-forward boat shoe with a ripple bottom sole. I also had the opportunity to travel frequently to the brand's manufacturing partners in Asia where I received an education on various manufacturing techniques and processes. These experiences taught me how to prepare development tech packs for new upper and outsole designs.

 

Additional Designs & Collaborations

The success of the brand at the time provided the opportunity to work on many different construction types including cement, hand-sewn, strobel, direct-injection, and vulcanized. I designed products that targeted an array of consumer demographics, wearing occasions, and distribution channels. I also had the pleasure of working on several brand collaborations including Gray Malin, Band of Outsiders, and Universal Studios.
